At Hand

In my recent studies it was pointed out to me that God often used what was at hand for his service. For instance when God used Moses He made use of the Staff he had in his hand, when He used David, God made use of the slingshot he had in his hand, when Jesus made a point it was using what was at hand, for instance writing in the sand, or pointing out the wheat that was growing nearby. God did not make them go out and find the right tool, it was right there all along.

How often do we think we need to learn more, know more, grow more, have this or that, or think that we are not good enough for the job, when in truth God can use what we have right now, right this moment. Parents often look for what has become known as teachable moments, in order to impart their child with a small tidbit of wisdom. As Christians maybe we should look for those sharable moments when a stranger needs a kind word, or a smile. Or maybe an acquaintance needs someone to listen for a bit. Or my favorite, maybe a person you know just needs a big hug. If God can use what's at hand, then think about the possibilities for witness in your life if you let God use what is near you. God will always give us the right words at the right moment.
